The first 5 minutes of a big workshop or event are usually spent waiting for people to settle (maybe they got logged out of zoom or their last meeting ran a minute late). It’s difficult to use those first few minutes for anything meaningful because it’s likely you’ll have to re-explain everything so people don’t get lost. However, it’s also awkward staring at a big group, trying to make small talk for 5 minutes!
So if we’re running a big session and foresee this happening, we like to create space fillers. We share the whiteboard/slides as people join and invite them to play around/just catch their breath while we wait. Music helps too 🙂
Here’s a slide deck with some examples 🙂

Some ideas:
- A welcome slide so while we all wait people know what’s happening
- A map for people to ping their locations
- A pet wall! Everyone loves to share pet pictures (plant babies included)
